Term 1 review

I havent really posted much about my first term at uni, its been really fun, hard, but fun. Im still waiting to recieve my first grade as i handed in with a late hand in due to personal circumstances, so me and a few others will probably get our results after the holidays.

The project we did was really entertaining to do, although the amount of money it cost was silly haha( eg, travel, book binding, materials etc). But i knew uni was going to be expensive, so i'd say to anyone wanting to study at any university, more so any london one, to make sure you have the money to both keep yourself fed, healthy, clothed and housed and still be able to afford things to do with your course! :)

i've met some awsome people already in my first term, we've had a few problems with flatmates and such, but that was to be expected haha, We're already looking for a house to move into next year which i can't wait for!!
Its all heads down and hard working from here, not that i havent been doing that anyway ;) but the odd, occasional drink has been involved as it would be with student life!

Have a great christmas to everyone reading this! Talk in the new year!!!

Stenciling

Using stencils in my work was really interesting, i've never really thought about using this kind of medium before, but i turns out im kind of a natural at it! We did a lot of it at uni (i'll upload some pictures later) and when i got back to my flat i felt that i just had to do more, some of them are from collages that i made myself and other ones are from things that i got out of magazines, personally i think the magazine ones worked better.
I used fabric paints to colour them in, i didnt realize that i had no acrylics in so i had to work with what i had, but to be fair, the fabric paints worked wonders, they mix so well and give some amazing effects, for instance, the swirls on the yellow jacket (image 3) was from mixing a red and yellow and spiraling it round, it kind of starts mixing into an orange but doesnt get all the way there because the paint isnt being pushed into eachother enough.

I especially love how the illustrations have arms that can't be seen, like this one above (image 4), the arms are crossed so they aren't visible to the viewer, but if you were looking at the original magazine image, you'd see the end of the sleeves and the wearers arms folding into eachother. none of the illustrations have the original colour scheme of clothing on, i've altered all of them into my own image, so they can't really be traced back other than with the stance the models are taking.

Back to my GIF roots

So my tutor loves the idea of gifs and has been pushing us all to make some, and as i have a history with making some i thought i'd give it a go again, i'd forgotten how tiring it it making them, i mean, i made one really simple one which is only 2 frames, but i still spent over an hour sorting it all out on photoshop, its not that impressive, but its a start onto some ideas im having at the moment.

MyBlog.arts.ac.uk

So im having to make this new bog for uni and its taking the pissss, would be so much easier to just keep it all on here. The blog im making is more of my own custom made website which is really cool but its the slowest thing ever.

I'll still keep posting all my work on here, mainly cause nobody here checks it and i can swear a lot!

http://tylercookson.myblog.arts.ac.uk/ the link to my new blog/site, but it will mainly just have research on and not a mass amount of my own work.

On another note the uni is brill, if you're interested in anything fashion i urge you to apply and take your education/passion further, the staff here have the best connections! Plus all the friends you make here become your new connections when you're out in the world, i already have people to contact from fashion journalism, photography, design (womenswear), public relations, 3d effects... all that malarky. Probably the best choice ive made coming here.

Probably for the best to ignore my first post, i'll be deleting it later, its a total ballache to figure that site out! urghhhhhhhhh

Brick lane research

So for my first project i was told to research everything i could about the street "Bricklane". As an iconic place in london, its full of culture and history to delve into, such as the 1999 nail bombing, its many famous curry houses, and the ever shifting cultures that come to inhabit it, which have been local brits, the jewish peoples and today the bangladeshi community, for which its nick name is banglatown.

Ive also found out that it has a massive amount of vintage and charity shops, as well as its market which attracts the students of the city of london looking to sell their wares. The street has become a large scene  for artists and fashionistas, again mainly because of the market and vintage shops, the deals they offer are highly sought after by students on a budget. (I should know, im a proper little deal finder)

This week im going down to do some street drawing, aybe find a few deals, try the food and ask about in the shops to see if i can find any more info about the street.

Drawing from a catwalk

So in my 2nd lesson i was thrown into the shallow end of the course and told to draw from a catwalk, HARDEST THING EVER! john if you're reading this make the first years do it, its so useful for getting them to draw fast in split seconds!

Its a really hard techinique to get, mainly cause you literally have 2 seconds on each model before you have to change, and the colour palette you have to use is so broad, so it helps to have a hand full of colours at the ready to be able to change fast without fucking about too much, I'll post a few pictures of the work ive done, only the good ones obviously!

If you're going to try this, its also best to start adding some base colors down first, a lot of runways will go through a colour scheme, so if the first outfit is blue, then dash the blue on for your next figure before you draw any figure at all! its makes the piece look more finished rather than rushed, plus the fact that the colour isnt even inside the whole figure looks brilliant, nice finish to any fashion sketch.

Pre entry task

These drawings were made as a pre entry task for uni, they show my likes and dislikes, as well as what was supposed to be a self portrait at the top

London living

So ive been living in london for about a week now, and its safe to say im loving it here! made so many friends and the fashion/art scene here is amazing!

The halls im in are swanky as fuck, im on the 11th floor so i can see central london from my room. the only bad thing is that nobody has moved into my flat yet :(((  but alas there is still time for that too happen.

I think next week im going to have a trip by myself to the national history museum, because its m favourite place in the whole of london!! i might have a wander into the V&A and science museum aswell.

Still feels unreal that i can just hop on the tube and go to these places, wouldnt wanna be anywhere else though!

Friday 22 August 2014

Off to uni soon!

So i only have 2 weeks until i go to uni, i know i havent posted much on here since i left college but its mainly because ive just had a massive detox of work, but im ready to get back into it!

im so excited to go! i even bought a new macbook just to spoil myself ;) I'm studying fashion illustration when im down there.

the course officially starts on the 29th of september but my seminars and lessons dont start till the 2nd week of october which is really late i thought, but hey ho.

So expect a lot more work within the month, and even more when i start!

G'bye for now!!!!

Life drawing

All of this work was for my portfolio to take to my university interviews, as it required a decent amount of life drawing to be included.
Most of them mix in with my work on the personal project and the Alternative Miss World, as they ran at the same time as life drawing.

Weird little coincidence!

So I was on tumblr the other day and I saw this girl wearing the same outfit that I collaged a few moths ago, it so creepy cause I never posted my work online! Even the hairs the same!!! I love it so much haha

Lincoln exhibition

So at the lincoln show i took some pictures of the work i liked most and the work that related to my work the most.

These shoes really related to my idea of having some massive heels on my mannequin, i love the look of them, they have the look that they're unfinished, im guessing its supposed to look like that. but even so they look bloody brilliant!!

I love the idea of using old bike handles as the hangers for clothes!it just gives the whole thing this weirdly intresting look to it! Love!!! the t shirts themselves are a bit dull, but hey, can't please everyone can you.

exhibition

So this is my exhibition so far. Its nearly done apart from the DVD's need to be burned to go on the screens in the faces. i really like the grungy look of it all, it kinda makes everything bounce off of eachother and fall into place.
at first i thought it was really small and minimal, but now i look at it with fresh eyes and i think its ok, its not at all like my original idea but fuck, thats life isnt it.

Final piece

For a few weeks ive been struggling to get all of my videos onto discs to show and my space, and ive finally got it to work. my computer was always telling me i wasnt able to do it and i was ready to punch through its already broken screen.

But, it turns out i just had to reduce the recording speed on the disc, duh

Happy happy happy, i'#ll upload some pictures of the space in progress tomorrow as its 2:10am and im busting for a wee and i feel like i eyes are about to fall out.

Statement of intent

Statement of intent
Tyler Cookson
Fashion Illustration
Behind closed doors:
My project has started on the base idea of making fun of the pope and religion, I got this idea after a trip within the first week of fmp and the odea has really stuck with me. I want the project to be really layed back, so I can drift off into another type of subject if it happens to go that way, so from religion I can connect it to things like celebrities and pop culture.
For my project I intend on expanding my knowledge of artists and techniques to come up with something I haven’t done before, whether this be a 3d piece, an animation or another process that I have yet to start playing about with. I’ve been really interested in collage with some of my projects so I would like for that to make an appearance in my work. The artists I looked at in my pathway stage are Walter Van Bierendonck and Bernhard Wilhelm who have both inspired me in my work, they work a lot in fashion with a mixture of fine art. I really like their work because they make it their own, they don’t follow any rules set by society and just generally have fun with the outfits they create.

Bernhard Wilhelm was a very big inspiration because of his work using gifs, I’ve recently started looking into fashion film and animation so this artist has been a big help because he’s already done a lot of the style of work im wanting to get into for this project.
For this project im looking at a range of illustrators, animators, fine artists and designers. I think looking at these will broaden my knowledge on the pathways I can take within my chosen subject area, as opposed to me having to be narrowed into one style of working.
I intend to go to a range of galleries and museums around my local area and some in London. I’m also going to see some of the degree shows at Lincoln and Nottingham to try and get some final inspiration for my work.

I want to use things like animation and collage in my work, after seeing artists use these mediums. They look really tricky but I think I could get the hang of it and put it into an idea for a final piece.

In the end my work will not only be assessed by my tutors and the administrator, I will ask viewers and my fellow students what they like and dislike about my work.   All of my responses will be recorded in my reflective practice book that will be present with my sketchbooks. Doing this will help me see what I could have done better and develop it if I do something similar in further education.

Geoffrey Lillemon

Geoffrey lillemon is an artist i found when looking at Bernhard willhelms work. they did a collaboration to do a mens underwear advert and an range of adverts for a womans collection in 2013. I really love the way he works, its so fresh and he just wants to merge things that nobody else would think of merging.

My favourite videos he did are the little animation he did for adult swim. they make you feel high without being high. i'll link them here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOLtYxJu2mk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z-B-j20Exw

i like his work on giving models huge droopy nipples aswell, it just makes me laugh.
http://dmpmnxvfdwr3.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Carbon-2013-Geoffrey-Lillemon-12.jpg

He's really sparked something new going on in my work, a good breath of fresh air for me i think.

Celebrity t-shirt designs

Ive been doing some more celebrity collages which i really like. Im doing these as a design process for what i want on my t shirts.
the process of making these images is completely random. I just click a random part of the face and the one that gives me a block of selection gets the colour changed. i like the selected parts to be small, only affecting a small fraction of the face, but i also like it if the selection wraps around their eye or nose, kind of like the skin has a weird effect on it.

There are ones like the one above that i really dont like, it was elvis but after the amount of editing ive done it just looks really shitty. blurgh. the main one i like in all of these is the natalie portman one below, it just has the right amount of editing on it to not over power it but not under do it. I love the nipples for eyes, they kind of put you in this weird trance where you cant look away from them. I think i might get this one made into a t-shirt.

Alina Zaminova - LCF Student

http://vimeo.com/43309842

This is a link to an LCF fashion illustration students work this year. I relly like how the video looks, reminds me of Quentin Jones animation/fashion films. From looking at it, it can kind of tell that she must have used a gif maker to produce the video.

Its a lot more choppy thn quentins work, but i like it in a weird way, it works. Seeing this standard gets me a little scared for when i go, cause im sat here all like, "shit can i do that?". but i think im just being stupid, its all about learning how to do stuff like that.

After looking through all of her work on the lcf website (http://showtime.arts.ac.uk/AlinaZamanova) i found out she does a lot of collages and she even does her own t shirt prints. So ive come to the conclusion that this girl is pretty much me in the future. swag.

Pubic hair

So I decided that im gunna go all urban outfitters and give my mannequins pubic hair just for the humour. The bottom of the mannequins would have looks really barren and bare so I think this would kind of liven It up abit.

I like this idea because it takes it back to my theme of the project just being funny, rather than being this really serious shop window. I want it to make people laugh, that's my main goal in this entire project.

How to mount a tv

So figuring out how to either mount a TV onto a mannequin is harder than I thought, it might come to that I have to mount or dangle the TV on the ceiling/wall in order for it to be in place. then I have the problem of finding somewhere for the dvd player that is going with the TV to go.

The dvd player I have is being a proper little fucker, it wont work. So im gunna have to go buy another cheap dvd player in order to play my animations.

im determined to get this tv mounted dilemma figured out soon. I really want my idea to actually happen. hmmm...

I have a feeling that im going to have to mount the tv on a stand connected to the wall, which kind of looks bad, but I guess i'll have to deal. maybe I could paint the tv to make It more interesting? hmmm. hmm indeed my friends.

Bernhard Wilhelm

I have been looking at my old artists to try and get some inspiration and its just made my mind explode with ideas, im not confused about my exhibition anymore, I know exactly what I want to do.

The final outcome is now going to be a shop window, filled with manequinns wearing my t shirts, with TV's for heads. the TV's will be playing my gifs on a constant loop, then I want speakers in the halls playing the music from the animations on the tv. I'm actually really excited about doing this now!

T shirt printing

I managed to find this place called smarty pants in worksop who did my t shirt exactly as i wanted! the end result on the shirt came out a little bit pixalated but all in all it looks really good as a garment. I think im gunna do a lot more of these before my exhibition, its funny because from the start i was ademant that i wasnt touching any garment, and now its my end piece.

Sunday 1 June 2014

T shirt design

So i started doing these little mock ups of t shirt designs with some collages that i'd done earleir in the project, i really think they work well as garments, im looking into getting a few made, but its just a ballache finding somewhere that will do them. Theres a place in worksop that does t shirt printing but i dont know if they can do it directly like this. I looked online a lot at places that print t shirts but they dont do the image exactly like this, its all been ajusted so the image is central or so that you get a specific area where your image can be.

Reflecting on my work

Overall im both happy and annoyed with my work, everytime i do something i tend to get this new idea and it just messes up my whole dynamic. My idea has now gone onto making fun of political figures by making them model my clothes. I kinda think this would be funny.

I got this idea because i was thinking of the whole idea of making my own bound book for the exhibition, but now that i think about it, if i have a book just full of designs wont that just be another sketchbook?! arghhhh.
If i did that idea with the people like david cameron and john mann, i could actually make fun of them, which i would find more enjoyable than doing something i dont find interesting.

I really want my project to go in this direction, but its just finding the place to do it and the time to do it. i never have time to work at home, so im probably gunna go into college over the rest of half term just to get some work done.

Richard hamilton

I've found this new artist named richard hamilton, he's a painter and a collage artist, but i can't help but notice his collages look very fashion based! i love his work, he combines his painting and collage with real spaces, (i.e an empty room with plain walls and plug sockets).

His work looks really simple too, but with the amount of pictures piled into his one picture, it must be very complex and time consuming.

These pictures are from his work titles :Photomontage. I really like the look of them, they're just so weird and random, like the giant lolopop in that scene just looks so normal yet out of place.

Hannah Hoch

I can't remember if ive looked at hannah hoch before, i think i did when i first started looking at collage. I really liked her work because it seemed so free, i like to think my work is a lot like hers, even if mine is rubbish compared to it. Actually i dont think my works shitty at all, i'd rather believe mine and her work are on the same level, but just in different contexts. she enjoys going all out and wild in her work, just like me!!

http://www.moma.org/collection_images/resized/181/w500h420/CRI_75181.jpghttps://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhZm7eHQrLpkGNgHuzWXzJiEyW00g3W4e0LU5D9TFiSsZK_XfGd4BG5l2PA1Z-WlJW_qRBQBp2B0ZLqLhumUPy-Lh9z8psHwRepVSwnQOuqdLPiGlk1aV4nybWjKm52L_3xxlb-sX0FX8/s400/hannahHoch1.jpg

Ive just started looking at more artists because ive kind of narrowed my knowledge base to like, 3 artists, so im just broadening it abitt now, so i can see new and fun ways to work. This work kind of shows me that i dont have to use body parts to do anything to a person, the picture with the scissors has some random brown square as a body, but it just looks right.

Réne Van Den Berg

This is one of the last artists im putting on to do with the shoes, the shoes they've designed don't tie in directly with what im doing but I still think they're super cool. They did a collaboration with Leanie Van Der Vyver to do her Scary Beautiful shoes. Originally he is an orthopaedic shoe designer, although now he concentrates mainly on fashion and these wild designs he does.

I really love this shoe (above), the shoe itself splits into two sections down the middle and you physically encase the wearers foot with it.

Caroline Sciancalelpre

I really like these shoes, mainly because they're not shoes at all. They're pedestals, they don't attach to the feet directly, the wearer just stands on top of them. I like them because of this little feature, the design is really weird and cool, but I don't like the fact that you can't walk around in them when you have them on. That takes the theme of them being a shoe away and makes them more of an installation or a interactive sculpture. The shoes have been hailed as the ultimate concept shoes.

If I was going to try and design some of these I'd want to make them into actual shoes, so all they'd really need is some strap that goes over the top of them to keep your feet held in. in a way I'd like to make them taller as well.
